Truth will always be truth

Truth will always be truth, regardless of lack of understanding, disbelief or ignorance.

I am not, never have been and never will be a racist.  I abhor all forms of discrimination and as such I would never join a party that held such views.

Let’s begin with the dictionary definition of racism – below are two definitions from the first two on-line dictionaries that I came across, I have underlined the key wording . . .

Collins Dictionary describes racism as “the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others“, and also “abusive or aggressive behaviour towards members of another race on the basis of such a belief”.

Dictionary.com describes racism as “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.” and also “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races”.

UKIP’s position has never, at any time, espoused that UK citizens are superior to those in Europe (or elsewhere), nor that they wish to rule these other people or countries.  And UKIP have certainly never advocated any form of abusive, aggressive hatred or intolerance of anybody.

The Party Constitution states clearly that it does not discriminate against or in favour of any person on the grounds of their race, religion, ethnic origin, education, beliefs, sexual orientation, class, social status, sectarianism or any other basis prescribed by law.

Some people believe the UKIP stance of stopping the mass migration of EU member citizens constitutes racism so let me point out a few things as I see them;

  • Most countries in the World restrict the ability of non-nationals to visit, stay, work and claim benefits.  The US has very strict rules governing the issue of green cards.  Australia have a points scoring system.  These are just two of many many countries.  Are all these countries racist?  No.
  • The EU only advocates the free movement of EU member citizens.  Its own rules restrict or prohibit the free movement and right to work for many non-EU members.  So if the UKIP position is racist then surely so is the EU position.  At least the UKIP position would be equal and fair to all people – EU and non-EU alike.  You would not get special treatment as a member of the EU ‘club’.
  • For the UK to remain competitive in International markets it needs to employ the best people.  If the best people are not available from the UK job pool then it is clearly in the Country’s interests to bring in those skills from outside.  The import of skilled workforce to fill needs within our economy is vital and UKIP support this view, as Nigel Farage explained to me during the recent interview I did with him that you can find a link to here.  These people may come from Europe or further afield, their nationality is irrelevant, what matters is that they are filling a skills gap that exists and making a positive contribution to Britain.

I am not anti-Europe or anti-European but I am anti-EU and the proliferation of a European superstate.

Europe has a fantastic mix of vibrant and diverse cultures – we have all enjoyed travelling to European countries at some time or another for holidays, school exchanges or work.  I want the UK to retain its culture and heritage and I believe the Empire-building desires of the EU are a direct threat to that.  If the other countries in our region want to blur themselves into a middle-grey United States of Europe then that’s up to them, but it’s not what I want for the UK.

So why do some people still say UKIP are racist?  Well there are 4 main reasons;

  1. Misinformed – They believe the hype and outright lies posted by others.
  2. Misunderstand – They don’t know what UKIP stands for when it comes to immigration.
  3. They are simply seeking to discredit UKIP as a genuine political alternative.
  4. Because they have no good reasons or hard evidence to disprove UKIP statements that leaving the EU will be a benefit and so try and deflect attention away from the Euro-sceptic argument.

On a couple of recent occasions, a profoundly unpleasant individual has been exposed peddling racist views that purports to be a UKIP member or supporter.  Regrettably it is true that there are some extreme individuals who are trying to legitimise their views by claiming to be UKIP.  These people are not tolerated within the Party and their membership will be revoked – UKIP is (as far as I know) the only political party that stipulates members may not be members or past members of racist organisations.

In recent months UKIP has become a victim of its own success, seeing a surge in membership and a rapid increase in the number of people standing as candidates.  Unfortunately the background checks on some candidates haven’t been done as quickly or thoroughly as they should and a very small number of people have been allowed to join and stand when they shouldn’t have been.  Again, these people are not tolerated within the Party and their membership will be revoked.

Let me reiterate, I am not, never have been and never will be a racist.  I abhor all forms of discrimination and as such I would never join a party that held such views.
