Last week saw a big announcement from Surrey County Council that they are going to hold a referendum to raise our council tax by 15%.
Yes, you read that correctly, 15%. Here is a link to the proposal from SCC.
If this doesn’t sound ridiculous enough, hidden in the detail is the fact that actually the plan is to raise Council Tax by 15% from April and THEN hold the referendum in May. If the referendum is unsuccessful then people will be able to claim back the extra money that they have paid.
So, assuming that the proposal is rejected, Surrey County Council will have to spend tens of thousands of pounds administering refunds to half a million households across the county. That’s on top of the cost of holding the referendum in the first place.
If this isn’t the most profligate waste of our money, I don’t know what is . . . oh . . . wait . . . I do know a bigger waste . . . the massive pay-rises and bonuses that Councillors awarded themselves – against the advice of the independent review board set up to advise them.
On the 4th of May you will have the chance to vote out this useless, self-serving shower and elect people who will make a difference in your community.
They say that the definition of madness is repeating the same action and expecting a different outcome – if you continue to vote Conservative you will see more of the same.
It’s time for a change in local government – Vote UKIP to make that change happen.
